VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENT | GLOBAL

VISION AND MISSION

The Ocean Cleanup develops advanced technology to extract, prevent, and intercept plastic pollution. In 2018, The Ocean Cleanup initiated the largest cleanup in history by launching the first cleanup system; System 001 ("Wilson").

We are a young organization with a mission to tackle a global problem of an unprecedented scale. What we are aiming for is not easy, and we know we need to push the limits of current technological boundaries to reach our goals. Working at The Ocean Cleanup isn’t for everyone, but we believe that through optimism, perseverance, and ingenuity we can succeed.

We are recruiting a diverse team of bright, high-performing people, who feel comfortable going off the beaten path, and who perceive setbacks merely as necessary obstacles to be taken on the route to great and lasting achievement.

THE ASSIGNMENT

The Ocean Cleanup is leading an international project to estimate: (i) rates of annual abandonment, loss and discarding of fishing gear (ALDFG) from main gear types used globally; and (ii) produce annual raised global levels of ALDFG from each included gear type.

We are seeking volunteers to conduct in-person interviews in seaports selected to target the highest priority gear types and fishing nations. Survey forms translated in several languages for each gear types included in the study scope will be distributed to participants. Information will be collected on the weight, number and/or dimensions of each individual gear component that is lost, abandoned, or discarded per unit of effort and/or per unit of catch. Following an initial training, participants will be tasked to conduct on-site surveys. Surveys will be conducted between May and August 2019.
